Elden Ring is the maximum scope FromSoftware can achieve with its current capabilities, according to game director Hidetaka Miyazaki. The industry veteran shared this insight in a recent interview, where he also hinted at potential future projects for the studio.

Although many video games feature larger worlds, the Lands Between in Elden Ring are still vast, covering approximately 30.5 square miles (79 km²). The 2022 release is the largest game FromSoftware has ever developed, not including its extensive Shadow of the Erdtree expansion.

Despite this achievement, Miyazaki suggests that Elden Ring is as large as FromSoftware's games will get for the foreseeable future. In an interview with The Guardian, Miyazaki stated, "Where FromSoftware is right now, in terms of scale, I would say Elden Ring is really the limit." He expressed concerns about the studio attempting a project larger than their 2022 hit anytime soon, indicating that no such massive game is currently in development.

Given this context, Miyazaki mentioned that focusing on multiple smaller projects might be a logical next step for the company. This approach aligns with his long-standing goal of providing other FromSoftware creatives with opportunities to direct their own games. Examples of this strategy include Tomohiro Shibuya and Yui Tanimura directing Dark Souls 2 in 2014, Masaru Yamamura helming Armored Core 6: Fires of Rubicon in 2023, and Miyazaki co-directing Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice with Kazuhiro Hamatani in 2019.

In the same interview, Miyazaki confirmed that Shadow of the Erdtree is the last planned project related to Elden Ring. However, he did not rule out the possibility of licensing the IP for other interpretations or adaptations, such as a movie. "I don’t see any reason to deny another interpretation or adaptation of Elden Ring," he said, although he noted that FromSoftware likely lacks the expertise to venture into different mediums. This comment comes weeks after George R.R. Martin sparked rumors of a potential Elden Ring film or TV adaptation.
