The highly anticipated remaster of Fate/Stay Night will be released on August 8, exclusively for the Nintendo Switch and PC. Despite being published by Sony Group-owned Aniplex Inc., the game will skip PlayStation consoles.

Originally developed by Type-Moon, Fate/Stay Night is a visual novel that debuted on PC in 2004. It was later ported to the PS2 and PS Vita in 2007 and 2012, respectively, and even received mobile ports in 2015. However, none of these versions have been launched outside of Japan. In January 2024, Aniplex announced plans to remaster the PS Vita port for the Nintendo Switch and PC.

Seven months later, the publisher has confirmed the release date of August 8 for the remaster, but reiterated that it will only be available on Steam and the eShop. Aniplex has not explained why the game is skipping PlayStation consoles.

One possible reason for this decision is that visual novels have historically been more popular on PC and handhelds rather than on Sony’s home consoles. The Nintendo Switch, for instance, boasts a large selection of high-quality visual novels, while such games are less common on Sony and Xbox platforms. Aniplex may have deemed a PlayStation version of Fate/Stay Night Remastered not worthwhile, at least for now.

This isn't the first time Aniplex has chosen to skip Sony consoles with its releases. Visual novel Hookah Haze, launched on the Switch and PC on July 11, followed the same pattern. Similarly, visual novels Hira Hira Hihiru and Murder Mystery Paradox: Fifteen Years of Summer were released exclusively on PC in late 2023. Tactical RPG The Hundred Line: Last Defense Academy is also slated for release only on the Nintendo Switch and PC in early 2025.

Fate/Stay Night Remastered will retail for $29.99 and will have a 10% launch discount until August 21, according to its eShop page, which is already accepting pre-orders. The game's Steam listing does not yet have pricing information available. While the visual novel won't be coming to PlayStation platforms, PlayStation owners can look forward to Honkai: Star Rail's Fate/Stay Night crossover in 2025.
